Why one room stays hot while the attic gets your cooled air

The usual cause is a boot that has pulled loose. Flex branch runs in 1990s–2000s tracts hang from joists on thin straps. Insulation settles, the strap bites, the collar works free. Conditioned air then dumps into the attic. The register still blows, just weakly, and it carries attic dust and loose fiberglass with it. A black smudge ring on the ceiling paint around the grille is the tell. Go look before you call anyone.

Sealing means mastic, not tape. Cloth duct tape dries out and lets go in a hot attic. The inner liner of flex gets drawn to the collar with a band, mastic goes over the joint, then the outer jacket is banded separately. Sheet-metal plenums and the return drop need every seam brushed, including the ones facing the framing.

Return leakage matters more than supply leakage. A return drop that passes near the garage pulls garage air into the house. Older homes here with galvanized trunks and panned joist returns leak the worst.

Sealing will not fix an undersized single central return. If the ducts are crushed or the flex is torn open along the run, replacement beats mastic.
